Hello vidders!! Welcome to the monthly(-ish) chatter post. Feel free to talk about any vidding topic at all, it doesn't need to be related to your bingo card - although it can be!
My first two vids were ones I used to sort out the technical side of things and are no longer online. I used Firefly footage for one and Andromeda footage for the other.
I just checked back in time and noticed I made these in April 200, so it's kind of my vidding anniversary this month. Woo!!
My first two vids were Heads Will Roll (about Control from Person of Interest) and Resolution Road (about Emily Prentiss in season 6 of Criminal Minds).
I finished one of the Discovery vids I mentioned in the last vidding chatter post!
To my chagrin, I've just realized a vid I finished in January fits a prompt on my card (would it be weird to post it here this late?).
I stopped watching Criminal Minds in season 5, but I still have a lot of feelings for them tied up in my heart apparently ... that was a compelling vid!
Ooh, great song choice for Control! I'll have to check out the Prentiss vid, but I think I actually skipped most of season 6 (and all of 7) because it seemed like it was going to be a rough run for her. (And then I came back and watched so many additional seasons of the show that I'm not 100% sure why I bothered to skip those.)
My first vid was a Rose/9th Doctor vid to "C'est la Vie" by B*Witched in 2009 or so and it is still on YouTube. Except for some clumsy audio editing, I stand by it. (And then I more or less took a 10 year hiatus from finished works.)
I've begun to make tentative progress on two solo vids and one co-vid -- mostly clipping, and about 8 seconds of actual edited material. One is definitely going to be for my sadness square if I ever edit the seven-minute song down to something usable, but the other two are a bit up in the air. I guess one is acoustic? I feel drawn to make it but I don't know that anyone but me is crying out for an atmospheric, very specific Mad Men vid in the year 2021. We will see what comes of it!
What a catchy song! And your editing was well done - you captured some nice movements and paired them well with the music. I would never have guessed it was a first vid!
I feel drawn to make it but I don't know that anyone but me is crying out for an atmospheric, very specific Mad Men vid in the year 2021 I love vids to older sources. Revisiting movies and shows can be so much fun - both as a vidder and as a watcher.
Thanks! It's funny to take a 10-year hiatus from vidding, because I can still see elements in that 2009 vid that feel pretty characteristic of how I vid now (most notably having a saucy visual joke involving a champagne cork is still...very me).
I like vids for older sources as well! I tend to love seeing vids even for things that I don't feel actively "fannish" about, if I have any familiarity with them and the vidder is doing something interesting. What I look for from vids is very different from what I look for from fanfiction (although I like older sources there too).
I'd love to see a Mad Men vid. That was a great show. I never had the urge to vid it but I did write a couple of short fics. I'll have to check out your Doctor Who vid. My first vid was for Torchwood. I used some Rose and Ninth Doctor in a later dancing themed Torchwood/Dr Who vid.
Your vid is super cute! Made me smile. Much better than my first, lol.
And I love Mad Men and also love the look of Mad Men. I'm in the middle of rewatching the show and feel very drawn to make something for it. The vid I didn't make last time I did a rewatch but had the idea for and then pushed my sibling into making (and they did a much better job with it than I would have!) is Lose Yourself, which charts Don's story over the whole show. I'm planning something a bit more narrowly focused right now, looking at the show's visits to California.
My first completed vid was with no god attached (Babylon 5, musings about the Vorlons altering people for their own gain, sort of), and I just finished it this past January.
I finally started rewatching/clipping Black Sails, I had 2 vids for it in mind but now I have like 4 vids fully planned out. I'm trying to rename my clips as I go rather than just trust vlc's timestamps from clipping them in approximately chronological order like I did with my last two vids.
Your B5 vids are making me want to rewatch the show. I haven't watched it since it aired and have forgotten so much about it apparently.
Clipping is a necessary evil for me. I know vidders who don't clip, and I tried that with my first The Mandalorian vid and decided it wasn't sustainable for me. Also, my organizational habits make me break out in hives if things are just jumbled.
I label my clips with a combo of episode and sequence number and then a brief comment to remind me what's in it. That way I have the best of both worlds, I can search for a character name or I can scan through an episode.
Here's an example of some from Rebels which I clipped/vidded a couple years ago.
Sometimes if I've been clipping for a while, I get lazy with my naming (magic jedi stuff?). I'm a bit more descriptive with The Mandalorian which I clipped earlier this year.
Thank you! I find it to be a show with a lot of rewatch value, it was very heavily arc-based for it's time, and certain things from the early seasons take on completely different meanings the second time you watch it. (Also I saw you're a fan of The Expanse, and I'm pretty sure they took a significant amount of inspiration from B5, particularly from seasons 3 and 4.)
I'm doing something similar with my Black Sails clips, episode/sequence/characters present/location/description, hopefully it will allow me to mostly just reuse the clips between videos instead of redoing them each time. My Babylon 5 vids were very limited in scope, while my planned Black Sails vids are centered around the main-est of the main characters, so it's a lot more screen time to sort through.
My first vid was Cool Guys Like You for Heathers – I picked a movie to make things easy on myself lol. I think I had my own computer at the time (this was also back in 2009) but it wasn't powerful enough to run video editing software so I had to make this on my dad's.
My structural choices in this vid were less deliberate and more incidental. There are some segments where, rewatching, I just wanna get back in and recut them because the rhythm is off, but then there are others I look back at and I am like, ah, yes, I see why I decided this was a good hobby. Because matching clips to music is still the most delightful thing :D
My first from 2008: Torchwood, Jack Harkness, song -When My Boy Walks Down the Street by The Magnetic Fields. Https://youtu.be/aaUnv4dPrvU I don't remember this, but the aspect ratio is off and the quality is low. Ugh. Hard to watch.

Yay for the Disco vid!
And no, it wouldn't be weird at all. Post it! :)
